House with blue shutters in the French countryside
Do you have a house in France that needs to be renovated? If you do not want to do that yourself or do not have the knowledge, you will have to hire someone. Finding an excellent craftsman and explaining what needs to be done in French is not easy, even if you speak French quite well. In Great Britain, it is already challenging to assess a quotation accurately, but a quote in French (a 'devis') is even more difficult to understand.
Village in Burgundy
We were not secretive about the fact that we wanted to move to France and we talked to several people about our plans. France is a big country, and it is impossible for one person to know everything about it. Yet in a short time, we met a large number of specialists. Acquaintances of ours had stayed with friends in the Auvergne and told that it was the most beautiful region in the whole of France. Others had camped in Provence, and for them, it was inevitable that you should have to buy a house there. A few people didn't like France at all and told us to emigrate to Spain.
Village in the Auvergne
Everyone knows everyone, and everyone knows everything in the villages and small towns in France. At least, that's how it seems. Anyway, you can sometimes find out a lot about the local housing market by talking to the locals. Hotels, chambres d'hôtes, cafés, restaurants, campsites are the best places to do so because you can build short-term relationships here. By the way, local is entirely relative. The gossip area often extends for miles around.

Every year we ask the readers of France Property Guides about their dreams and plans for buying a property in France. The 2020 survey took place in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, but the huge response is a clear sign that we’re raring to go as soon as we can.
