Moving to Hungary from the UK might initially appear to be a daunting task, especially since the UK is no longer a member of the European Union. However, it's not as complicated as one might assume.

Registration in Hungary

For UK citizens planning to stay in Hungary for more than three months, there's a requirement to register. This registration should be done in person at the National Directorate-General of Alien Policing or its local branch responsible for your future residence, no later than the 93rd day after entering the country.

To register, you usually need the following documents:
  • An employment contract or an employer's declaration
  • For sole proprietors: A valid business permit or registration number
  • For job seekers: Documents proving this, where the commencement of employment is likely
  • A lease agreement or proof of property ownership
  • Evidence of sufficient financial means
  • Proof of eligibility for health insurance benefits or financial coverage of these services

Once all conditions are met, the National Directorate-General of Alien Policing promptly issues a registration certificate. UK citizens might also need to apply for a residence permit, given the post-Brexit regulations.

Your Car in Hungary

An essential aspect to consider is your car. In Hungary, there's a levy for everyone who registers a car for the first time. Electric vehicles are exempt from this first registration tax. Therefore, it often isn't financially viable to import a car into Hungary. It might be more sensible to buy a new car in Hungary or purchase an already registered one.

Retirees and Pensioners in Hungary

Permanent residency for retirees and pensioners from the UK in Hungary requires a few more steps than for EU citizens. Registering as a foreign national in Hungary is necessary to obtain a valid residency certificate. During registration, the state will want to know:
  • Where you live
  • Whether you can afford to live in Hungary (usually, a bank balance of around EUR 2,000 – EUR 2,200 is sufficient)
  • Whether you have health insurance
  • If you suffer from any notifiable diseases

In Hungary, every employee and self- employed individual is compulsorily insured for health. The contribution is officially 7% of the income.

Health Insurance for Retirees

It's essential for UK retirees in Hungary to ensure they have health coverage, either through private insurance or a bilateral healthcare arrangement between Hungary and the UK.

Registration with the Local Authority

After receiving the registration certificate, you'll be registered with the residents' registration office of your municipality. With the receipt of the residency card, you're officially a resident of Hungary.

Permanent Residency Right in Hungary

Once you've lived in Hungary without interruption for 5 years, you can apply for permanent residency.

Moving to Hungary can be an exciting and enriching experience. By considering the points mentioned above, UK citizens will be better prepared for the move. Best of luck with your relocation and your new life in Hungary!
