Nice, a swimming pool in the garden! There are a few measures you can take to keep swimming safe for your children. These also apply in case your
neighbors or friends have a swimming pool in the garden, or for a swimming pool near your holiday home or hotel.
Tips
- Teach your child to play by the pool alone with you.
- Immediately after playing, clean up the water toys, swimming pools, inflatable crocodiles, etc., so that your child is not tempted to go back
into the water when you are no longer there.
- If there is more than one adult, agree who will look after which child. Don't just assume that when you're away for a while, someone else will
pay attention.
- Never allow siblings to watch children who are unable to swim.
- Is there a swimming pool nearby with deep water that is not well protected? Make sure your garden is well protected and ask if the pool can be
better protected. You can also put on a life jacket for your child, but that only works in deep water where a child cannot stand.
Security
- Place a fence around the pool that is 1.20 meters high and has vertical bars with a maximum distance of 10 cm between the bars. Make sure that
the gate has self-closing locks that your child cannot open on its own.
- A tarpaulin cannot be used as a safety device against drowning. This is because the sail has to be placed over the bath every time after
swimming, and this is sometimes forgotten. Moreover, a child can crawl under the cloth and end up in the water unintentionally.
- There are so-called splash alarms. These are floats that are lying in the water (just on or just below the water surface), and that gives a
warning if a child falls into the water. An alarm below the surface is better than a surface alarm. There are also systems that are around the
child's wrist. These give an alert if the wrist strap gets wet. The problem with this is that they also provide an alarm if a child has his or her
hand under the tap or gets wet in some other way. According to literature, swimming pool alarms are not entirely safe. Never use an alarm as the only
security measure, only as an aid.
